Job Summary
The Project Field Engineer (Civil) performs professional engineering work supporting roadway resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, and guardrail installation projects. Under general supervision, this role ensures public safety, structural integrity, regulatory compliance, and successful delivery of municipal infrastructure projects from design review through construction completion.
This position is ideal for a civil engineer with experience in construction inspection, contractor coordination, and public works or transportation projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as Project Field Engineer for contracted services including sidewalk repairs, guardrail installation, and roadway resurfacing
- Develop and manage procurement for field-related engineering and construction services
- Act as liaison between consultants, contractors, City/County departments, agencies, and the public
- Review plans, designs, specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and engineering documents for accuracy and completeness
- Coordinate the construction bidding process, including:
- Bid document preparation
- Pre-bid conferences
- Bid openings
- Pre-construction meetings
- Review and approve submittals, invoices, and payment applications
- Coordinate with contractors and internal teams to ensure project timelines, objectives, and quality standards are met
- Perform construction site inspections to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations
- Prepare cost estimates, administer contracts, inspect contractor work, and approve provisional payments
- Track and manage project budgets and schedules
- Apply knowledge of open and enclosed drainage systems
- Perform related engineering duties as assigned
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with coursework in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
- Equivalent combination of education and experience considered
- Knowledge of modern civil engineering methods and practices
- Working knowledge of survey systems, engineering drafting, and construction documentation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prepare technical reports
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and position-specific engineering software
- Ability to work effectively with municipal officials, contractors, state/federal agencies, and the general public
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration in North Carolina
or Engineer Intern (EI) actively pursuing NC P.E. licensure - Experience with CAD and GIS
- Background in municipal, transportation, or public works projects
- Work on visible, community-impacting infrastructure projects
